Dear Eleanor

I am writing to your web site from Italy. I live in an industrial city. I tell you, that I was married 43 years ago and lived in Canada.

My husband, ‘rest his soul’, was a bricklayer in Toronto and I worked in one of the fashion places, on Spadina Avenue, in Toronto. My mother taught me to sew from when I was a small girl.

Six years after my husband died, one of my daughters, married in Italy. She lives with her husband and three small children near Rome. I decided to return to Italy to be near them.

I live very close by and enjoy taking care of the 2 smallest grandchildren, several days a week, until my daughter gets home from work.

I am writing to explain, that I have, now, a real job. When a business man in this town, Antonio B. …a friend of my son-in-law, learned that Anthony’s, mother-in-law spoke English, he asked me to teach him how to speak English.

I am not a teacher and would not take any money from him because I was doing a favor. We started with simple objects, especially in his factory. Soon he was learning simple sentences.

Antonio was so pleased when he could talk to a distributor in the U.S., without having a translator on a second phone.

Next, he asked if he could employ me to teach the ladies in his office to speak English.

I am now, the English teacher, in our town. I go to the factory twice a week and teach English. This means that the other nonna, (Italian grandmother), has to look after the children more, but I pay for her and I to go on small trips and she likes that because her husband will not pay for holidays.

I also, give English classes at night.

I have more, ‘How do you say?’ cash flow, than I have ever had in my life. I visit my other children in Toronto regularly. And guess what, I am the Italian teacher, at my church, in Toronto, when I'm there.

I hope you like my story.
